Selection of the right interpreter depends to some extent on the occasion for which he or she is required. There are various options for deployment of an interpreter. It is also important that interpreters are bound by a professional code. Essential aspects of this professional code are integrity and professionalism. Some interpreters are also bound to secrecy, and any information they hear as an interpreter must be treated with confidentiality. Moreover, the interpreters must provide a Certificate of Good Conduct.

For some assignments, interpreters must be registered with the Register for Certified Interpreters and Translators. In order to be eligible for registration, the interpreter must have the following competences: the correct attitude and integrity, the correct language skills in the source and target languages, adequate knowledge of the culture of the country or region of the source and target languages, and the correct interpreting skills. Registration is for a period of 5 years. It is extended as long as the interpreter can prove to have undertaken a minimum number of interpreting assignments and to have followed sufficient schooling.
